Do Your Part

An idea whose time  has come

For too long we have  been too complacent about the workings of Congress.  Many citizens had no  idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one  term, that they didn't pay into Social Security, that they specifically  exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being  exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary  citizens must live under those laws.  The latest is to exempt themselves  from the Healthcare Reform that is being considered...in all of its forms.   Somehow, that doesn't seem logical.  We do not have an elite that  is above the law.  I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican,  Independent or whatever.  The self-serving must stop.  This is a  good way to do that.  It is an idea whose time has  come.

Have each person contact  a minimum of Twenty people on their Address list, in turn ask each of  those to do likewise.

In three days, most  people in The United States of America will have the message.  This is  one proposal that really should be passed around.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States  Constitution

"Congress shall make no  law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply  equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no  law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply  equally to the citizens of the United States."

Not much hope in sight

Of the top 15 oil producing countries in the World, we can only safely call about a third of them friends.  If you want to see where we get our oil, click here:

The Problem

We are in Trouble!!

68% of the crude oil we consume is imported. Most of the money we pay for our imported oil goes to countries or groups that support terrorism. It's time we stop funneling money to our enemies.

The high price of oil creates a major drain on the U.S. economy. Not only does it lower the standard of living  for American households, but worse, the money we pay for oil is giving our enemies the resources to turn around and buy our country.  If we keep going like we are, in a matter of a few years our enemies will not have to conquer us, they will all ready own us.

The revenues and dependencies in the world oil market empower oil rich countries—such as Russia, Iran and Venezuela—to carry out foreign policies that are hostile to that of the United States.  In simple terms, we are funding our enemies and they have us over a barrel.

From Internet blogs, to think tanks, to the hallowed halls of Congress, everyone seems to agree that our dependence on foreign oil is bad for the country.   The problem is all this rhetoric so far has accomplished nothing.  Congress only wants to bloviate. They have failed to produce any meaningful leadership toward developing an energy solution.   On Wall Street, investors are too timid to buy into any potentially risky energy programs so they take the safe way out by investing in turning corn into ethanol which only creates bigger problems.

We are in trouble and if we don't do something soon we are going to be in big trouble the likes of which this country has never seen before.  The clock is ticking and it is up to all of us to do something about it.

The Solution

Needed..... A National Commitment

This year, Brazil will achieve energy independence — a goal the United States has been chasing without success since the energy crises of the 1970s.  We could do the same, but only if we can create some sense of National unity toward a common purpose.  We have done it before.  On May 25, 1961, president John F. Kennedy proclaimed to a joint session of Congress:

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon fulfilling the national goal that was set 8 years earlier.

We need a similar national committment setting a goal to become totally energy independent in 10 years or less.   Most energy "predictors" and think tanks say this can't be done.  For sure it can't be done with our current congressional and presidential leadership.  All they are capable of is useless rhetoric that acomplishes nothing.   Unfortunately there is not a single presidential candidate that makes energy independence anything more that a few passing words to pacify the "green" voters.

Chief executives since President Carter have set goals to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, yet the USA still imports 68% of its petroleum needs — more than after the second oil shock in 1979.  It's obvious that the solution to our energy problems will not come from Washington, especially in an election year.  Morever, the oil companies, don't care and the automobile manufacturers don't seem to have a clue as to what to do.

It appears that the solution will have to come from actions taken by the citizens of our country, the consumers who created the problem, and the ones who are now being hurt by it.  In this website, we are going to explore ways we can do this and share success stories and ideas from people who are already making a difference.

What can we do?

Pick the ones you like, but do something, even if you don't see something you like!

1. Drive less, consolidate trips whereever possible.

2. Eat less, waste less.

3. Vote for people who seem to have some sense.

4. Support public transportation, especially passenger railroads.

5. Support reasonable forms of alternate energy, even if it costs a bit more.

6. Write your representatives, let them know we need a national committment to ZERO FOREIGN OIL.

7. Keep your house a little cooler in the winter, and a little warmer in the summer.  Turn off anything not being used.

8. Get committed!  Being green is noble, but recognize the buying oil from those who want to do us in is a much bigger issue.
